Our Summer Theater Camps strive to give students quality training and experience through age-appropriate activities that encourage self-expression, nurture self-esteem, and challenge the imagination. Our professional staff is committed to making this a memorable and magical experience for your child, who will have fun developing their talents and making new friends. Our Staff consists of collegiate theater and music majors who have extensive performance experience. Most are former campers who are pursuing careers in the arts. Under the direction of Dream City Theater Directors, Mark & Rachel Stoddard, our camps are led by award-winning teaching artists from the Phoenix area. Over the last 20 years, these quality camps have helped launch numerous aspiring artists into performing arts colleges and careers. Of the over 2000 campers who have been through our camps, most will not pursue a career in the arts but will have gained invaluable experiences that help them in everyday life. Skills like public speaking, stage confidence, creative collaboration, channeling their imaginative energy, problem-solving, following direction, and virtues such as respect, patience, friendship, and teamwork. The affordable price makes it a great way for students to develop their talents, make new friends, and have fun!

Musical Theater is truly a unique art form. It interweaves three major performance styles - acting, singing, dancing. In the theater business, a performer who is a "triple threat" has successfully mastered these three styles. Through educational games & activities, campers will explore character development, improvisation, stage presence, public speaking, auditioning, proper singing technique, basic musicianship, various theater dance styles and more. To culminate their experience, campers will rehearse a one-act musical featuring many popular Broadway songs to present for their final showcase performance.

Upon arrival, students participate in an opening warm-up session that includes movement, educational games, and activities. In groups, the students then rotate through three sessions. Each session uses exercises, games, and activities to teach and reinforce specific stage presence and performance skills:

  1. Acting (character development; script interpretation; awareness of the stage environment; auditioning; improvisation; ensemble work)
  2. Singing (proper breathing and vocal production techniques; projection and diction; reading musical notation; basic musicianship)
  3. Dancing (musical theater movement; production choreography; elements of several dance styles)

After a 10-15 minute snack and bathroom break, the remaining time is devoted to rehearsal for the production.
