Dream City Arts Academy is offering exciting spring classes available for all ages in acting, dance, musical theater, acrobatics, and painting. Classes are taught by professional artists with years of experience in their areas. Meet new friends and expand your artistic talents and skills. Come join the fun!

Advanced Acting

Wednesdays 6:30-8:00pm (March 6 – April 24)
Ages: 16 and older
Cost: $150

Description: Take your acting to the next level. This class will focus on development of the actor’s voice and movement, character exploration, monologue preparation, improvisation, scene partner work, and more. Designed for performers who have moderate to advanced acting experience.

Lead Instructor: Mark Stoddard – holds an MA in Educational Theater from New York University and has 30+ years professional experience an award-winning writer, actor, director and educator. He has written and directed over 300 theater productions and serves as the Performing Arts director at Dream City.

Broadway Bound – Musical Theater Dance & Vocal Intensive

Wednesdays 6:30-7:45pm (March 6 – April 24)
Ages: 11-15
Cost: $110

Description: Does seeing a Broadway show make you want to jump out of your seat, and join the performers on stage? If so, this 8 week intensive will help you develop dance techniques in multiple dance styles used in musical theater (including jazz, ballet, contemporary, and more). You will also learn basic vocal training and technique to confidently sing age-appropriate songs from your favorite shows.

Lead Instructor: Shayla Davies – has performing credits in numerous musicals, worked at Disney World, and teaches at various studios and schools in the Phoenix area. She also choreographs for Dream City productions.

Foundations of Acting

Mondays 6:30-8:00pm (March 4 – April 22)
Ages: 8-11
Cost: $120

Description: Join us for a fun and exciting exploration of acting techniques including characters, storytelling, movement, improvisation, script reading, and more. This class is perfect for beginner or intermediate actors who want to discover the world of acting and develop their skills.

Lead Instructor: Dan Stoddard – has several years of experience as a performer and theater educator. He writes, directs and stage manages the productions at Dream City.

Acro-Fun

Saturdays 9:00-10:30am (March 9 – April 27)
Ages: 7-13
Cost: $120

Description: Come burn off some energy and explore the exciting world of tumbling, acrobatics, gymnastics, dance and more. Students will develop their skills in body coordination, balance, rhythm, strength, flexibility, fitness, endurance and team work.

Lead Instructor: Arona ‘spider’ Spader –regularly performs and dances in theater shows in the Phoenix area and choreographs for the productions at Dream City. She is a certified massage therapist, fitness instructor and can climb a rock wall like a spider!

Acrylic Painting

Wednesdays 6:30-7:45pm (March 6 – April 24)
Ages: 14 and older
Cost: $100 (plus supplies – see below)

Description:  You will learn the joy of the creative process, while allowing yourself to explore and experiment. Students will learn about perspective, color, and different painting techniques as well as how to participate in an art critique to learn and grow your work. This class will be tailored individually to each student’s needs, skills and abilities – no previous experience required.  

Lead Instructor: April Edwards – holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the University of Kansas and has over 30 year experience in her craft. She is also a talented Costume Designer and is the Production Manager for Dream City theater productions.

Materials: Students will be asked provide their own painting materials and supplies which will total about $50. Registered students will receive a list of materials and suggested places to purchase items (like Michaels, Walmart or Hobby Lobby).

Dance Technique Fundamentals

Mondays 6:30-8:00pm (March 4 – April 22)
Ages: 16 and up
Cost: $150

Description:  Everyone from advanced dancers to beginning movers can benefit from strengthening their technique. Using various choreographic methods and dance styles (including theater, jazz, ballet, modern, lyrical, and more) experience an in-depth and detailed dance class in a fun, safe, embarrassment-free zone.   • learn and refresh established dance and movement skills
  • increase your strength and flexibility, gracefulness and confidence
  • explore how physicality can improve your acting and character development
  • learn dance vocabulary that will help you orient faster in auditions
  • explore everything from pointed toes and turnout to powerful arms and expressiveness!

Lead Instructor: Kathleen Brazie (MA, RSME, E-RYT-200/YACEP) is an award-winning choreographer and dancer who has performed, trained, and taught in NYC, Arizona, LA, and South America. Frequently collaborating on large-scale theatrical productions, educational workshops, and classes as a movement expert and facilitator, she specializes in technique and form, collaborative creative processes, dance-making, character development, textual analysis, and performance skills, and whole well-being.

Wellness and Conditioning

Thursdays 6:30-8:00pm (March 7 – April 25)
Ages: 16 and up
Cost: $150

Description:  While geared towards performers, this class is open to anyone interested in flexibility, strength, conditioning, injury prevention, and grounded body awareness. Come with questions, and learn how to protect and strengthen yourself on and off the stage. We will work on:

  • increasing flexibility with proper stretching technique
  • preventing and caring for common repetitive stress or movement injuries
  • identifying and repatterning inefficient or misaligned movement patterns
  • using Pilates, breathing, props, and some basic nutrition to build strength and support your performance and physical well-being.

Ballroom / Social Dancing

Saturdays 7:00-8:15pm (March 9 – April 27)
Ages: 16 and up
Cost: Individuals = $85, Couples = $140 (Drop In: Individuals = $15 / Couples = $25 per 1-week session)

Description: Like watching ‘Dancing with the Stars’? This class offers a fun, accessible introduction to Ballroom dancing and other styles such as Swing, Salsa, Tango, Line, Two-Step and more. Each week will be a standalone lesson accompanied by a social dance time so students can practice their new moves! Enroll for the full 8-week session at a discounted price – or you can ‘drop in’ and pay at the door each week. Couples – this makes a fun date night and there is a great discount when you enroll together.

Lead Instructors: Andy & Kristina Burch have performed in many Dream City productions and train at the Arthur Murray studios of Arrowhead.  They dance together in amateur competitions in International Standard and Latin, American Smooth and Rhythm as well as specialties like salsa, merengue, hustle, bachata, Lindy, country western, nightclub two-step, Argentine tango, and west coast swing.
